LUCIUS

I still wasn’t welcome to stay the night with Azar in the church when we returned from the cabin, which was weird and freaking annoying.

It was Azar’s home. Cyrus and Bas lived elsewhere in town, and so did Eggy and my cousin. But Cyrus had a temper tantrum saying the church belonged to him too, and he refused to have me stay there. In the old days, I would have blinked and turned him into a piglet, but, summoning my inner strength and the goodness Azar was convinced was buried deep inside me, I tried to understand the situation from the phoenix shifter’s point of view.

He and Azar had known one another for almost a century. From what I gathered, Cyrus had lived here with Azar and his mate. And the two shared the home after the warlock’s death. Cyrus held Azar in his heart; they were like brothers. He didn’t trust me and with good reason based on my past behavior.

I had a sneaky suspicion Bas had something to do with it. He disliked me, but it wasn’t the same as my cousin’s hatred and dismissiveness. Tamon and I had a history, whereas Bas viewed me as an interloper, someone who wasn’t part of his extended family.

Initially, the day I walked back into the church, Eggy went into protective dad mode—as did Tamon—but as the weeks progressed, his attitude softened. Azar and Cyrus had brought Eggy up, and he wanted Azar to be happy.

But Cyrus, Tamon, and Bas were outside the church when Azar drove up. With their arms folded and serious expressions, though aviator sunglasses hid their eyes, they ganged up, saying I needed to return to the spelled house each night, the one where I was a prisoner. I agreed, despite Azar’s protests.

“It’s fine. We’ll see one another tomorrow. But can I suggest that before I leave, or should I say before you drag me back to my cell, we do more work on trying to regain my powers?

That left Cyrus out because he had no power. Azar only had minimal magic, thanks to his late mate. It was odd thinking of Iwyn as a separate person. He was technically, but some or all of his essence was in me. But it was easier if I thought of us as two separate entities; otherwise, I’d never focus on restoring my powers.

“Fine. I say we go for it.” Bas sneered.

No matter how powerful the part fox shifter part warlock was, he would never have matched my past ability. Now, he could pin me to a wall, and I’d stay there, helpless as a newborn.

Good luck, a chorus of ghost voices trilled.

“They’re talking to us,” Tamon informed me. He’d always been cocky though I wasn’t one to talk as I’d been even more so. “Me and Bas.” Azar was staying out of it, not only because of our relationship but also because his magic wasn’t strong enough.

“Maybe you’re wrong, and they’re referring to me.” I grinned.

“Away.” Tamon outstretched his hand.
